Sonny Allen Taylor

Sonny Allen Taylor, age 73, of Cumberland, Kentucky, passed peacefully from this life on April 19th, 2026, at the Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital. He was born on September 11th, 1952, to the loving union of George and Jeannie Ball Taylor in Savannah, Georgia. While still a young child, the family put down roots in Wallins, Kentucky, a place that would shape the man he was destined to become.

Sonny attended Wallins Elementary School and proudly became a Wallins Purple Devil, a title he never let go of. Right up until his final days, he would remind anyone who would listen that he was a "Wallins Purple Devil for the rest of his life."  Those words weren’t just school spirit; they were a testament to how deeply he loved where he came from.

Life tested Sonny early. When his father passed away, Sonny was just a freshman at James A. Cawood High School. Without hesitation, he left school to take on work and help his mother keep the family afloat. That sacrifice was not a setback, it was the forge in which his extraordinary character was shaped. The work ethic he developed in those difficult years became the foundation of everything he accomplished. He would go on to outwork men three times his junior, never cutting a corner, never doing anything halfway.

Sonny was a renowned contractor, not just in Harlan County, but across many states and regions. For over 20 years, he co-owned Taylor Construction alongside his brother, a business built on craftsmanship and pride. He was a perfectionist in the truest sense: if something had his name on it, it was done right. He later served the community he loved as an employee of the Cumberland Housing Authority for over 17 years. Whether swinging a hammer or overseeing a project, Sonny poured himself into every job he touched. He didn’t just build structures; he built a legacy.

Sonny was a member of the Creech Avenue Church of Christ in Cumberland, where his faith in God was a steady anchor throughout his life. He believed in living what he professed, in kindness, in generosity, and in never turning away someone in need.

For over ten years, Sonny poured his heart into coaching youth baseball with the All Stars, Minor League, and Little League teams. He knew that baseball was about far more than balls and strikes. It was about teaching children how to compete, how to lose with grace, how to win with humility, and how to show up for one another. Countless young men and women in this community are better for having had Sonny in their corner.

If there was one thing you could always count on from Sonny Taylor, it was his unwavering devotion to the University of Kentucky Wildcats. It didn’t matter the sport, basketball, football, baseball, if it was Kentucky, Sonny was watching, cheering, and probably giving you his very detailed opinion about it. He was a Wildcat to the bone, and he wore that blue with pride.

Sonny had a knack for persistence, and nowhere was that more evident than in his pursuit of the love of his life, Linda Graham Taylor. He asked her out time and time again until she finally relented and said yes. As Linda herself tells it: “One date, and I fell in love with him for his personality. We laughed so hard and enjoyed each other’s company.” That first date turned into a lifetime of laughter, love, and partnership. Linda was his greatest treasure, and he made sure she knew it.

Sonny’s children will tell you he wasn’t just their dad, he was “dad” to practically every kid in the community. When Sonny opened his front door, he wasn’t just welcoming you into his home; he was welcoming you into his family and into his heart. The neighborhood kids knew it. They felt it. And many of them called him “Dad” right alongside his own children, because that’s exactly what he was to them.

He was famous for two things that often went together: his dad jokes and his pranks. If you were around Sonny long enough, you were going to be the butt of one, and you were going to laugh about it whether you wanted to or not. His humor was a gift, and it made every room he entered a little lighter and every gathering a little more memorable.

He loved to share a saying his mother passed down to him, the reason she named him Sonny was because he was so bright, she simply had to. And anyone who knew him would tell you she was absolutely right. He lit up every room, every dugout, every job site, and every family gathering he ever walked into.

Sonny’s greatest pride and joy were his two grandchildren, Madison Isabella Wilson and Finnegan Alexander Sayre Taylor. When he wasn’t spending every possible moment with them, you might find him settled into his favorite chair, lost in an episode of Justified, or swept away in a classic John Wayne film. In those quiet moments, he was exactly where he wanted to be, home, at peace, surrounded by the life he had worked so hard to build.

Sonny was preceded in death by his beloved parents, George and Jeannie Ball Taylor, and by his brothers: Terry, Johnny “Butch,” Troy, Gary “Mike,” Jerry, and Robert Gene.

Sonny leaves behind a heart full of love in the lives of his devoted wife, Linda Graham Taylor; his son, Thomas Benjamin (Samantha) Taylor of Berea, KY; his daughter, Alma Christina Taylor of Cumberland, KY; his bonus daughter, Sandra LeAnn Farmer of Salisbury, NC; and his two precious grandchildren, Madison Isabella Wilson and Finnegan Alexander Sayre Taylor. He is also survived by a vast circle of nieces, nephews, friends, neighbors, and community members.

Sonny Allen Taylor was a man who never needed a title to lead, never needed recognition to give, and never needed a reason to love. He simply did, every single day, with everything he had. The world is quieter without him. But the laughter he brought, the work he left behind, and the hearts he filled will echo in this community for generations to come.

Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, April 23rd, 2026, from 10 a.m. until 1 PM at the Cumberland Valley Funeral Home.
