Marion Wayne Cress, age 57 of Cumberland, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, March 31, 2024, at the Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital.
He was the son of the late Denver and Irene Halcomb Cress. He was working for the City of Cumberland in the maintenance department for over 33 years. He was a mason with Fields Lodge #832, F & AM.
He was known as “Papaw” by his co-workers and affectionately called “Goose” by members of his family. He had a loving personality and was always doing things for others. He enjoyed playing bingo, guitar, having cook outs in the summertime and family gatherings. His favorite holiday was Christmas, mostly for the food, and the 4th of July, when he loved to celebrate the freedom in this country. He loved to travel, if he didn’t have to drive and enjoyed fishing any chance he got. Marion loved his family, co-workers, friends and pretty much everyone he met. He enjoyed life and always tried to make the most of every day. His early departure from this earth has left a void in the hearts of his loved ones and in our city that became his second family. “Papaw,” you shall be missed!
He is preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Sue Cress, sister, Vernia Day, nephews, Ray Maggard, Chris Cress, Patrick Cress, Billy Cress, Brandon Cress and his great niece, Kerra Kay Cress.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his companion, Gloria Faye Day, sons, Morgan Lee Cress, Cody Dewayne Cress, brothers, Verlin (Connie) Cress, Billy (Libby) Cress, Benny Cress, Eddie (Linda) Cress, James (Doris) Cress, sisters, Sue Cress, Belvia Short, special friends, Keith Adams, Bill Brashears, all the City of Cumberland employees.
