Luther (Papaw) Pennington's life journey came to a close on July 1, 2025, at the Hazard Appalachian Regional Hospital. Born on July 18, 1941, in Hyden, Kentucky, he became a cherished figure in Leslie, Perry, and Harlan County. His departure has left a deep void in the hearts of his family and friends. As a retired sawmill worker, devoted family man, and passionate Bluegrass music lover, his life was a testament to the power of love, laughter, and familial bonds. This memorialization shows his amazing personality, the bonds he cultivated, and the memories he created, reflecting a life lived with passion and humor.
Luther's early life was shaped by his parents, Boyd and Becky Jane Gross Pennington, on the hills of Kentucky. Having experienced both triumph and loss, he carried the lessons of his late siblings, Willard, Johnny, Fariston, Billy Ray, Maggie, Shirley and beloved wife, Geneva Eldridge Pennington, who passed away in 2018. The love he shared with his children, Luther Jr. (Cheryl), Becky (Joe), and Belinda Gail (Scott) exemplifies his commitment to family. His extended family, including siblings, Ethel, Boyd, Farmer and a multitude of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, further shows the values he instilled: unity, respect, and affection towards one another.
Luther’s life was marked by a joyful spirit. Known for his infectious laughter, he enjoyed working on old vehicles, hosting family gatherings, and barbecues that became the foundation of many memories. His passion for outdoor activities, like fishing, provided him with serene moments away from life's stresses. Luther also cherished simpler pleasures, such as watching Western movies and listening to Bluegrass music. These pastimes not only reflected his personality but also his connections with family and friends who shared similar interests in a life rich in relationships.
Beyond the stories of his life, Luther Pennington’s legacy embodies a commitment to uplift those around him through humor and kindness. He was known for being the type of person who would 'give the shirt off his back' to help someone in need, embodying the spirit of generosity. His astounding ability to make others laugh brought happiness not only to his immediate family but to others as well.
As we bid farewell at his funeral at Cumberland Valley Funeral Home, beginning at 12 noon on Saturday, July 12, 2025, we celebrate the love he gave and received, ensuring that while he may have departed this world, his spirit will always linger in our hearts. The sorrow felt at his passing can be soothed by the memories of warmth and joy he cultivated among us.
