James Amburgey, Sr. Obituary

Mr. James Emanuel Amburgey, Sr., a cherished resident of Cumberland, Kentucky, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at the age of 85, following a long illness at the Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital. Born on December 13, 1939, in Letcher County, Kentucky, James was a beloved son of Benjamin Franklin and Roma Dixon Amburgey. He was preceded in death by his brother, Benji Amburgey, and his sister-in-law, Kathy Amburgey.


James is survived by his devoted son, James E. Jr. (Celena) Amburgey, of Kannapolis, North Carolina, and his loving brothers, Enos and Eddie (Helen) Amburgey, all of Indiana. He took great pride in his family, which includes his grandchildren, Caitlin Marie (Mark) Hodge of Laurel Springs, North Carolina and Conner Amburgey of Kannapolis, North Carolina, as well as his great-grandchild, Phoebe Hodge, also of Laurel Springs, North Carolina. James also leaves behind a special friend, Carolyn Wade, of Cumberland, Kentucky, along with a host of other relatives and friends who will forever hold him in their hearts.


A man of many passions, James enjoyed the great outdoors, finding joy in hunting and fishing. He was known for his easy-going nature and love for fun, often gathering with friends and family for all-night Rook card games that filled the room with laughter and good times. His dedication to his work as a Water Plant Operator for the City of Cumberland spanned over 20 years, a testament to his strong work ethic and commitment to his community. James was also a proud college graduate, having earned a bachelor's degree that reflected his determination and intellect.
James Emanuel Amburgey, Sr. will be deeply missed and forever loved by all who knew him.

A memorial service in his honor will be announced at a later date.
