Gerald Henry “Tom Jack” Bailey departed this life on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, after a short illness, at the Chandler UK Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky.
He was born on March 11, 1953, into the union of the late Merlin Bailey and Reo Sumpter Huron in Dearborn, Michigan. He was a disabled coal miner, having worked previously for Darby Creek Mining Company. He believed in God, was a member of the Shriner’s Club and a Mason at the Fields A&M Lodge in Cumberland, Kentucky.
“Tom Jack,” as most everyone called him, was a giver. He was an amazing neighbor, always going out of his way to help people. He was known for maintaining the HH Sumpter Memorial Gardens and dug an occasional grave for neighbors that had passed, as a way, to show his respect. He was regarded in the community as someone you could always depend on. Tom Jack had a demeaner that some would think he was too stern, but if he was like that with you, then you knew he loved you with his whole heart. He was a self-taught welder and loved creative art through the welding process. If he could visualize it, he could make it. He claimed to be a great fisherman and loved fishing on the Cherokee Lake in Morristown, Tennessee. He loved more than anything, spending time with his grandchildren. He was a proud grandfather. His absence will most definitely affect the community, but his memory shall live on in the lives he touched.
Left to mourn his passing, his devoted and loving wife, Madonna, daughter, Tatum Beth Bailey of Linefork, Kentucky, step-son, Shane (Charity Michelle) Green of Gordon, Kentucky, brother, Malvin (Patti) Bailey of Proctorville, Ohio, sister, Donna (Merril) Jones of Plano, Texas, sister-in-law, Melissa (Jackie) Cornett of Hiram, Kentucky, special cousins, Quinna Hall of Delphia, Kentucky and Darby Divine of Thomasville, North Carolina, five grandchildren, Sumpter Atlee Sexton, Andrew Ray Sturgill, Aiden Green, Michael and Daniel Haynes, special friend, Jackie Brock of Cumberland, Kentucky.
In following Tom Jack’s final request, there will be no services at the present time. Memorial Services will be held on July 30th, 2023, at the HH Sumpter Memorial Gardens in Gordon, KY. Exact time to be announced at a later date.
Cumberland Valley Funeral Home of Cumberland, Kentucky is Honored to Serve the Bailey Family.
