Billy Ray Lewis

Billy Ray Lewis was born on October 29, 1952, to the union of the late Chad and Bertha Boggs Lewis in Big Laurel, Kentucky. He passed away peacefully on Monday, June 29, 2026, at the Hazard Appalachian Regional Hospital. He was a man of quiet strength, determined character, as he radiated compassion and grace, enriching the lives of everyone who had the good fortune to be part of his world.

Billy Ray spent his career as a coal miner, proudly serving with U.S. Steel, ARCH Coal, and Lone Mountain Processing. He was a man who truly loved his work, always looking forward each day to the camaraderie of his fellow miners and the honest labor that defined him. His dedication to his craft was a reflection of the pride he took in providing for those he loved.

In his retirement years, Billy Ray discovered a new calling, one rooted in the same nature of hard work and neighborly love that had always guided him. He developed a great fondness for mowing lawns and soon began tending the yards of his neighbors with the same care and pride he had given to everything else in his life. He believed deeply in paying it forward and looked for every opportunity to help those around him. A tidy yard and a kind deed were, to him, among the finest gifts a man could offer.

After a long day's work, Billy Ray savored the simple rewards of a life well-lived. He could often be found relaxing on his front porch, taking in the peace of the outdoors before settling in to watch a good television show, his nightly ritual and well-earned rest. He also enjoyed spending time in nature, fishing and was fond of shooting guns, a pastime that reflected his love of the outdoors and the Kentucky hills he called home.

Billy Ray was a proud Mason with the Nolen Lodge No. 806 F & AM, an affiliation that spoke to his commitment to brotherhood, integrity, and service to his community.

On November 2, 1970, in Pine Mountain, Kentucky, Billy Ray married the love of his life, Betty Taylor. Their union, spanning over five decades, was a testament to devotion, partnership, and enduring love. Together they built a family and a home filled with warmth and purpose.

Billy Ray is survived by his beloved wife, Betty; his two sons, Daniel A. (Beverly) Lewis and Joseph Lewis; and two cherished grandchildren, Devlyn and Arron Lewis. He was preceded in death by his parents, Chad and Bertha Boggs Lewis.

In keeping with Billy Ray's own wishes, there will be no formal services held. His family asks that his memory be honored through the same acts of kindness and goodwill that he showed to others throughout his life.
